There are various forms of staff development that facilitates staff development and growth, so that they can help them carry out their duties efficiently under minimum supervision. Having a motivated staff raises Company's productivity and image leading to increased revenues. There is a need to have relevant and appropriate method of staff development for tangible and better results to be achieved. These methods are: workshops, handbooks, study groups, co-observations with colleagues, small-scale studies, professional learning communities, or other formats have to align with scholarly models of staff development. Scholarly models insist on personal development and career growth for staff as well at attainment of organizational for the staff development method (Speck & Knipe, 2005).
This involves presentations by profession trainers/speakers in class rooms or seminars. This method produces people who are high performers with excellent communication skills.
Mentoring and coaching
The old staffs that have ample experience and expertise share part their experiences with the new staff. They give them tips of how to be successful and counter the jobs stress and demands. The staff gets to develop and learn new skills from those who have excelled in their fields.
This is a practical method where staffs put in groups, and then given challenging work, problem and projects to solve. This method is widely used for training top management to be the future leaders. They learn leadership, problem solving, teamwork and decision making skills.
Professional learning communities
This involves learning with people who have the common objective, goal and vision. They share and learn a lot due to the fact that each person is unique in terms of experience and talents. They will guide, motivate each other and assist each other realize their potentials. This method achieves the objective of developing them professionally (Brooks, M. & Brooks, G., 1987).
Staff is issued with handbooks for them to read about the organization. This gives them the guidelines, rules, policies and their expectations. They can also seek clarification where they could not understand. As a result, the staff gets satisfied and feels welcomed, they become motivated and ready to deliver on the assignments (Golding & Gray, 2006).
Organizations have to be keen in selecting the appropriate method that is in line with company's expectations and vision, for them to realize its success. It is a marvelous thing to develop the staff as it leads to increased productivity for a company. There has to be evaluations, assessments and follow ups to see the impacts to each method.
