Mind and Body
On the chapter of the mind and body Nagel deals with the philosophical idea that the ability of a human mind to distinguish between the objectivity and the subjectivity can go along way in helping with understanding as well as solving problems that are philosophical in nature. In this section he talks of the subjectivity that is there in our limited point of view, especially when minds are deeply immersed in our personalized perception of our so in order for us to arrive at a more objective point of view then we must take a step away from ourselves and take a position in line with the subjective points of view.
He also argues that the tendency to believe in certain religious beliefs can not be explained by the way of human thinking or even the power of reason but rather by certain principles which generally govern the operations done by the human minds. In this chapter Nagel also argues that minds of individuals perceive the world in various ways and its ability to perceive same things also vary with different people. The mind of a child has low capability to perceive the world as an adult. Nagel categorically says individuals do not have to young in order to have minds that perceive things as even adult might have a mind that is able to perceive the world just like a young child and the reveres id also true i.e. A child having a mind that can perceive the world in similar ways that an adult mind does. He also tells of the presence of superior minds which can conceive things that his mind will never be able to. In this argument Nagel believes in the existence of different levels of conceiving the world and it depends on the ability of one's mind to do so; thus the gradation of human minds on abilities of conception of similar things around us.
Thought and Reality
In the sixth chapter of the book the view from Nowhere Nagel explains his philosophical thinking concerning the issues of realism concerning the link that exists between human thinking and reality of He says that basically human beings view the world to be independent of their minds and this way of thinking leads to complexity when it comes to explaining the form of idealism that many contemporary philosophers hold. In this chapter Nagel explains his belie that human mind do not determine what one knows but its ability to think diversely about the things that both exist and the ones that do not. In addition to that Nagel also elaborates on the realistic few of human mind to conceive far much beyond the things that have evidence of existence in the world and it is in this complexity of human mind that determines the realism of thoughts. In this Nagel entertains the philosophical idea that human mind and thinking on reality is not limited by what an individual knows but rather by what ones mind is able to conceive.
Also in this chapter Nagel In addition to that Nagel argues that since the human mind perceives what exist in reality and we have proof of that then it must depend on the general form of idealism which is assisted by the conditions of human thought. Also the tendency of human mind to try to represent the world objectively alters the human relations to the world hence increasing the correctness of such representations. His argument is that human mind can think and conceive much beyond things that are defined as real hence its ability.
To counter this he proposes that human mind should instead seek objective affirmation as it seeks the objective tolerance hence all our reasoning will be able to be tolerated instead of being rejected at levels where more objectivity is removed.
