At the beginning of 20th century many died of preventable illness and infections, but the discovery of the penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming led the way in saving lives, and it saved lives tremendously. The modern antibiotics as we see it today has been years of continued improving and discoveries. All these could have not been possible, if technology was not embraced in medicine.
In 1895, Wilhem Conrad Roentgen, a German physicist, discovered the X-ray. This would serve to detect fracture of any bones in humans and animals. Through scanning of the specimen, either a broken bone on hands, fingers, ribcage, legs; the machine can detect and give accurate information on which part of the body is fractured. The invention of x-ray led to continual invention of how the x-ray can be applied to other aspects of medicine. This saw Robert Ledley, the inventor behind Computed Tomography Scan common as (CAT-Scan) in November 25th 1975. This was advancement in x-ray technology, as the CAT-scan can do imaging of three-dimensional images where as X-ray is a two-dimensional imaging scans. In CAT-scan the imaging information is collected in a computer unlike X-ray which its information is collected on a flat piece of film.
The discovery of Deoxyribonucleic acid commonly known as DNA in 1953 by James D. Watson and Francis Crick was a breakthrough in medicine. DNA is genetic information of an organism. It passes on hereditary information from one generation to another. DNA has revolutionized science and technology in a big way. Advancement in technology has seen DNA being applied to various spheres of everyday life. It has been successfully in agriculture to produce genetically modified crops and livestock. It has enable breakthrough in solving crimes by forensic science experts. DNA also can be applied in genealogy.
The First World War and the Second World War were bleak times for the development of the medical research and development. This was because most of the resources were allocated development of battleground technologies to fight the enemies. During the period 1914-1945, most of the countries; France, Germany, USA, Britain, Russia had poured all their resources in devising and inventing technologies which included development of guided missiles and war crafts. In fact, World War two produced advanced technologies which revolutionized the warfare.
The massive research and development led to creation of sophisticated technologies such as the nuclear weapons and guided missiles. In fact, in the period of 1940-1945 saw the completion of the sonar and radar technology to be used in the submarine by the allied forces against Germany’s U-boats.
Governments on the other hand contributed too much loss of lives because a huge chunk of fiscal allocation was directed towards warfare. A lot of United States fiscal budget was allocated to scientific research and development of nuclear weapon and aircraft technologies.
Individuals too used technology on war. They perpetuated the research and development of new technologies through the scientific community. They developed lethal technologies to eliminate enemies. Each and every scientist or engineer who took part in research and development played teamwork and were a unifying factor to see success of the technologies. The individuals through the military participated in the war or in the key decision making organs to orchestrate the war either directly or indirectly.
During this period, many of the first world countries were engaging in enmity based on ideological differences and supremacy, and when things went out of diplomatic circles, governments saw war as the lasting solution to meet their geopolitical ends. The period between 1914 and 1945; which the First and Second World War took place, saw major loss of lives due to the offenses and defenses through use of stealth technology to settle scores. This period in history saw utilization of the scientific community; enormous resources were poured to see ground breaking war fares being created and sent to the battlefield.
The First and Second world wars were significant in that, they ushered in fast-tracking development of technology. Immediate years after the great way, science and technology witnessed remarkable inventions and innovations as resources were channeled towards rebuilding of the economy and technology was thought to be the game changer and thus saw institutions such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration being launched and given the mandate not only to research and develop rocket science but also how technology can be used to impact and save lives. Policies favoring advancing in technology were legislated and implemented.
