One of the key strengths of the US Air Force is its ability to produce large number of warplanes. According to Maximus (2008), the US Air Force is the biggest air force in the world in terms of war assets. It has a wide range of warplanes ranging from small fighter jets to big warplanes. Studies indicate that the capacity of the US Air Force war assets is equivalent to a combination of Russia and China’s war assets (Maximus, 2008). By having a huge number of war assets, the US Air Force is better positioned to undertake defense activities for its homeland security and that of its allies without much opposition from its enemies. Furthermore, availability of large number of war assets can allow the US Air Force to engage enemies for a long time without experiencing exhaustion.
Over the years, the US Air Force has managed to stay ahead of technological development in war equipments. This can be termed yet another source of strength to the US Air Force. Currently, the US Air Force uses aircrafts such as F22 and F35, which are said to travel at very high speeds, as well as target an enemy from a distant location (AirForce Classic, 2011). Its shrewdness in war technology enables the US Air Force to respond to external security threats within the shortest time possible. In fact, the US Air force has war equipments, which have the ability to detect possible air attacks by enemies, and disable enemies’ war equipments within the shortest time possible, without having to travel to the enemies’ physical location (AirForce Classic, 2011). Based on this strength, the US Air Force has been able to prevent various possible air attacks on the USA.
Combat experience forms the basis of the US Air Force competitive advantage (Tirpak, 2011). Over the years, the US has participated in major wars, which involved air attacks on the enemies. For this reason, the US Air Force has various documentaries, which it can rely on to develop attack strategies on its enemies. Besides, the US Air Force has a large number of veteran soldiers, who it relies on to pass air-attack skills to new and young Air Force officers. This has enabled to it always have well skilled and prepared personnel to conduct defense activities of different magnitude and from different locations.
However, one of the greatest weaknesses of the US Air Force is inability to control costs (Tirpak, 2011). Studies indicate that the US Air Force spends a lot of money in manufacturing and maintaining its warplanes. Given the current situation of the global economy, spending a lot of money is manufacturing and maintaining warplanes can be uneconomical given that other important sectors of the economy such as the health and education sectors are running at a deficit. In addition, the US Air Force lacks short take-off aircrafts (Tirpak, 2011). This is weakness because in many cases, its personnel use big aircrafts when conducting small security assessments and other routine activities. This contributes to the increased operational costs. The US Air Force can increase its efficiency in terms of costs by manufacturing small take-off aircrafts for use by its officers in their routine activities as opposed to using big aircrafts.
In this module, I have learnt how to conduct an internal assessment of an organization, to determine its strengths and weaknesses. I have learnt that all organizations have certain advantages and disadvantages, which affect their ability to meet the needs of their target markets. These advantages are termed as an organization’s strengths, while the disadvantages are termed as an organization’s weaknesses. Internal analysis helps an organization to maximize its strengths while minimizing its weaknesses. Besides, the module has enabled me to understand that not only profit oriented organizations face challenges in their internal environment, but non-profit oriented and government controlled organizations also face these challenges.
