“We have arrived at a point in history, where democracy has reached its deepest possible form. Citizens can now exercise profound and meaningful control over the state.” The years within the twentieth century had been very defining towards the realization of new form of democracy in the world. This is a paper, which gives a number of discussions on the issues, which revolve around the developments of this time. These are: What specific groups and actions have had the most success in spreading democratic ideas and institutions in various parts of the world? Which specific groups and actions have done the most to restrict democracy?
Introduction
The years of the twentieth century must have been the most demanding and worth studying for the entire global developments. This is so, because very many developments were noted, which brought a new definition on a number of issues such as democracy and human interactions that define this century to have been the gloomiest with the development of the Universe, and which defined the manner in which different nations and societies would associate with one another in the coming years (MacPherson, 1992). Democracy went from being a relatively rare political system in the world at the start of the twentieth century, to a strongly endorsed method of government at the end of the century. This development has had a very uneven progress in many parts of the world. As a student of the twentieth century world history, it`s very clear that we have arrived at a point in history, where democracy has reached its deepest possible form, where citizens can now exercise profound and meaningful control over the state.
Democracy Progress
During this time, there are a number of specific actions and groups, which did play a major role towards the success of spreading democracy in many parts of the world and also coming up with institutions and ideas, which were to lead to democracy in many parts of the world during this time period. As depicted from (Held, 2006) , it shall be agreed that this was the time, when majority of the nations were gaining freedom and independence from their colonizers, and hence this had profound impacts, and showed great improvements as majority of the nations had been in the right path of acquiring freedom and becoming self governing, and the actions aimed at fighting the colonialists had been a sufficient move in ensuring that a new era had occurred in such areas in which racism had developed, and in the very end the individuals were granted self governance .
As more and more nations during this time and within these continents continued to become independent, more ideas on democracy had been exchanged, especially in the African continent, and in that case a new wave of freedom fighting was staged, and this had been in the need for a new form governance and well established individuals, who had concise domestic democracy. This had been able to offer great success and more and more nations began to fight the odds from the colonialists, and become liberated. This had been crucial, and thus lead to a new wave of democracy, and spread in very many developing nations over the whole world.
The new wave of the first and second world wars plays one of the greatest roles towards the realization of new goals in the achievement of democracy (MacPherson, 1992). During this time period, people and nations met during the war, and this lead to the success of spread for democracy due to the fact that very many individuals met, exchanged views, and such individuals had come from different nations in order to help in the fight with the nations, which had been involved in the world wars. For example, history proves that new ideas must have been gained by different individuals within the Asian and African continents, and thus the end of the war led to the development of new progressions towards fighting for freedom. Basically, the world war should be known as one of the major developments of the nineteenth century, which must have been able to bring a new wave of democracy as the encounters of many nations and individuals from different parts of the world, and very soon new ideas had to be passed across, and this led to the new wave of democracy. Following the end of the war, United Nations was re-established and its duty had been in making sure that the future world was never to be engaged in any form of war, ever again. This means that democracy was able to gain a new form of meaning, and such would be the future for the current democracy, which has been noted today (Williamson, 2004)..
While majority of the events, which had been taking place during this time, had been able to promote democracy, the manner in which such form of development had been promoted was through ensuring that the eventual consequences of the actions would teach a number of lessons towards the ultimate understanding of democracy and what it ought to be. The Russian Revolution and Soviet Union is another kind of development, which has been known to have different events taking place, in which democracy being perpetuated had been crooked, and had much of negative consequences in the sense that it never in the least promoted equality, but on the other hand, presented autonomous lineage, in which power had been biased and not being fair on all individuals in the union. This kind of revolution had been developed and perpetuated into deeper parts of the world, and very soon some nations would lean on it, and hence the eventual development of communism which would be adopted by very nations over the whole world.
The time of the Postwar in Europe brought a new mindset, in which nations founded the NATO, and which had been aimed in putting off the engagements of the Soviets within their territories and ensuring that a new kind of development had been realized and by so doing promoting democracy. There have been many changes within the European Union, and many nations realize the need of joining the Union in the pursuit for a higher kind of democracy, something which had been highly achieved during the time period. This lead to spread the greatest ideas, and such did lead to the development of a much democratic European continent following the end of the war (Held, 2006).
The Modern Japan and Modern China have also been a new wave of development in the later years of the century, in which the nations decided to take new views and dimensions on the ideas and technologies as well as opinions from the western nations, and this has been noted by historians to have been a reputable defining moment towards increased rate of globalization as new trading blocs developed, and such leading to the establishment of new approaches towards the development of democracy .This has been the major reason, as to why new Japanese and Chinese engagements in international affairs have been necessary and a leading influence towards the realization of new form of democracy, which has been enjoyed by the different nations, and which have been supporting the new global developments towards the realization of democracy (Williamson, 2004).
While some of the major developments and actions or groups during the years of the twentieth century might have been promoting, the development of new form of democracy, what should also be acknowledged is that there had been a number of groups and occurrences, which had been a barrier towards the realization of such kind of democracy. For instance, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and Diplomacy of 1930s, and during this time, these republics had been engaged in moves and missions, which had been led by prejudice and mere malice towards the infringement of the global democracy and holding a new wave of leadership. This had been done in order to achieve a new kind of positioning within the global setting. This kind of involvement, as it has been presented in the module, outstands to be one of the major kinds of development, which played a major role towards leading to the denial of global democracy. The higher infringement with other members of the wider global society led to the world wars, and hence the wars would bring a new chapter and era towards a new wave of global democracy.
With the major developments of this century, one of the major things and developments, which cannot be under looked, was the Fascism and Great Depression, which had great impacts on the development of the global economy (MacPherson, 1992). This led to different views on what might have gone wrong, and what could possibly have led to such depression and negative impact on the economy. As a result, compromised democracy and different nations took into economic issues and considerations in an attempt to come up with ways and measures through which solutions would have been found on the ongoing economic depression. However, while many issues shall be agreed on with these developments of the nineteenth century, one thing which should be carefully noted is that the major events and groups might have played a major role towards comprising the global peace and democracy, but the eventual solutions would also be a solution and defining moment towards a new form of democracy. This means that some forms of democracy might have greatly restricted, but such might have as well been a defining moment towards the realization of a new form of democracy (Held, 2006).
In conclusion, there are a number of ways through which development of democracy did succeed in different parts of the world such as North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. To begin with, countries within the Asian and African continents begin to realize that their democracy following the end of the world wars in which new ideas had been acquired for the world wars. In Europe, the end of the World War II, and the post war period brought new changes, which lead to the new democracy, which spread very quickly to all the nations within the continent, and being also able to attract more nations into the European Union. The countries in the Latin America had similar developments, which are much similar with the ones of Asia and the African countries towards the realization of a new form of democracy. Basically, the Postwar Period in Europe and the Second World War must have been the major developments during this time, which must have had greater impacts towards the development of a new kind of global democracy.
