Creativity refers to the fact whereby news things are created having some kind of value. The thing that can be termed as new might be in relation to the one who has created it or sometimes to the society within which novelty comes from. This discipline is studied under many disciplines like psychology and philosophy. This essay critically analyses and elaborates upon the importance of creativity and its relation with other psychological factors.
Creativity concept has undergone several perceptions throughout history. In the Christian period, the term was meant to designate the act of God of making things from nothing. So creation had different meaning other than making and was not applied to the functions of man, as the perception that art isn't a domain of creativity existed in this time. Creativity as a term can be defined in terms of rare individuals or focusing it in general population including originality in the definition. On the other hand, it can also be defined to separate originality in terms of history and the novelty to the creator that is, historical creativity and personal creativity, (Mumford, 2003).
Being a mental process, it involves solving problems and the discovery of new concepts or coming up with new associations of concepts that exist. The creativity products are in most cases considered as having originality and appropriateness. It is mostly an attribute of divine intervention, social environment, cognitive processes, personality traits and chance. This emotion has been associated with mental illness, genius among others. It can either be taught with simple techniques application or inherent, (O'Hara, & Sternberg, 1999). It is a beneficence of amuse or muses. Unlike other scientific phenomena, it holds no single authoritative view or definition on the other hand it has no measure technique that is standardized as compared to other psychological phenomena that have standardized measure technique. Though in most cases, it is associated with literature and art but is an essential part of innovation and invention, on top of which it is vital in professions like business, economics among others like teaching, (Feldman, 1999).
Creativity differs from innovation in many ways. While creativity is referring to new ideas production act, innovation is referring to the processes of generation and application of these ideas in particular contexts. In the organization context, the term innovation is used to refer to the whole process that organization generates new creative ideas and their conversion into novel, vital and viable commercial services and products, and business practices, whilst creativity is reserved to refer to specifically apply to novel ideas generation by groups, individuals as a necessary step in the process of innovation. Though the two terms are novel, they have to move hand in hand, as to become innovative, people have to be creative to stay competitive. A psychodynamic move toward understanding creativity is under the suggestion that creativity usually arises due to the frustrated desires for fortune, fame and love with the energy that was earlier on tied up in frustration and the emotional tension in the neurosis being sublimated into activities that are creative, (Mumford, 2003).
Theories suggest that creativity might be categorically susceptible to affective influence. It has been suggested that positive emotions like love and joy widen individual's available repertoire of actions and cognitions, hence enhancing creativity. Positive emotions rises the number of cognitive elements for association and elements relevant to the problem, (Feldman, 1999). Other theories suggest that negative emotions enhance creativity having the corner stone on the relation between creativity and effective illness. Individuals debate on whether creativity and intelligence are part of same process or distinct mental processes. The research shows that the correlation between the two is low to the point of justifying the two distinct. Creativity is a result of cognitive processes while intelligence is judged as creativity in terms of consequences, (O'Hara, & Sternberg, 1999).
In conclusion, has existed from time immemorial and still has a brighter future due to its significance in many disciplines and its relation to them. So people having this 'talent' should nature it so that they can help the society.
