Safety and Health Policy

XYZ Construction Company gives priority to the health and safety of its workers. If a job poses a threat to the health and safety of workers, this company will make every effort to ensure that the task is done in a safe manner. Safety of procedures is mandatory, and no shortcuts in safe procedures either by workers or Supervisors will be tolerated. XYZ Construction Company expects its employees to immediately report conditions that pose health and safety risks to the management upon observation, or correct them whenever possible. It is the responsibility of the management to take sufficient precautions, abide by OSHA standards, and ensure the health and safety of all its employees. If a task cannot be done in a safe manner, then it will not be done completely. The management will offer visible continuous commitment, leadership, and resources to make sure that its workers remain safe. We recognize the significance of creating a safe work culture through effective procedures and policies, as well as employee involvement.

Roles and Responsibilities

Designated Safety Coordinator

XYZ Construction Company has selected (Name/Title) to coordinate, execute, and oversee the health and safety system. His responsibilities will include:

Understanding the possible job risks, and how to eradicate them.

Instituting safety and health procedures.

Conducting Job Safety Analysis.

Carrying out regular health and safety training.

Ensuring that OSHA construction health and safety requirements are adhered to.

Carrying out regular health and safety job site inspections.

Engaging employees in the implementation of OSHA regulations.

Taking part in accident investigations, and execution of corrective measures.

Writing statistical reports to compare the current frequency and severity rates against previous records.

Keeping records of trainings, injuries and illnesses, inspections etc.

Supervisor

The attitude of the Supervisor plays a vital role in preventing or obtaining the acceptance of healthy and safe work practices, procedures and policies. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to identify possible risks, identify actions to eliminate or control the risks, make sure that workers engage in secure and healthy work practices, and ensure that employees are trained on health and safety to enable them perform their duties properly. The supervisor will also be evaluated based on health and safety performance.

Discipline Policy and Procedures

The management of XYZ Construction Company has the responsibility of ensuring that key policies, decisions, hand health and safety procedures are implemented. Detailed OSHA safety and health requirements will be placed in writing such as: confined space, fall protection, lockout, respiratory program etc to be available to all workers. Copies of the company’s written safety program will be availed in all jobsites, as well as with the Supervisors. OSHA safety and health regulations will be posted at.

All of the company’s safety rules must be adhere to. Failure to comply will lead to severe disciplinary action. XYZ Construction Company will implement the following safety rules.

All workers must use sun block to protect themselves from sunburn and wear proper clothing.

Workers must always keep their minds on their work, and watch where they are going. No running please.

The use of illegal drugs during working hours, or working under the influence of drugs will automatically result in job termination. Workers are expected to inform their supervisor incase they are under strong prescription drugs that prohibit using machinery or driving. 

Workers are prohibited from engaging in horseplay or distracting their fellow workers during working hours. Do not engage in activities that would put the life or health of another employee in danger.

Cleanliness of the job environment is beginning of a safe job. All workers should ensue that they remove any debris or rubbish in their working area.

Any fear of walking at higher heights should immediately be reported to the supervisor.

Workers are expected to know the location of the fire extinguishers and how they are used.

Ensure that you lift loads in the proper manner; with the legs and not the back. Call for help incase the load is too heavy for you to carry alone.       

Nobody other than the operator shall be permitted to ride equipments, unless the equipment is designed to accommodate a passenger.

Employees are not allowed to use power equipments and tools unless they have been authorized to use them, and have received appropriate training on their use.

 Do not remove, destroy, or displace any safety appliances or safeguard on machinery or equipment.

Areas that are deemed dangerous to the safety of workers will be barricaded. Do not enter barricaded areas.

If an employee has to perform her or her duty around dozers, folk-lifts, trucks, power shovels etc, ensure that the operators of these machines can always see you.

Do not oil fuel, or lubricate ate equipments while in motion.

Prior to servicing, adjusting or repairing any equipment or power tool, ensure you disconnect it from the power source, and tag it out.

Excavations more than five feet deep must be sloped as needed. Stay away from trenches that are not accurately sloped. Excavated matter shall not be placed closer than two feet from the excavation edge. Excavations below five feet will need cave in protection where conditions show probable side failure.

Safety Discipline

XYZ Construction Company has implemented the below four-step disciplinary system upon failure to follow safety rules.

First violation: Oral notice.

Second violation: Written notice.

Third violation: Written caution; a day suspension with no pay.

Fourth violation: Written notice; a week’s suspension, or termination if necessary.

Zero-tolerance Violations: Violations of certain safety procedures are so serious in nature that no warning will be given upon violation; instead the employee’s contract will be terminated. Such violations include:

Entering risky confined places without adhering to proper procedures.

Entering hazardous excavations.

Failing to utilize fall protection equipment.

Both the Supervisor and the employee who permit or engage in unsafe acts will face job termination. A record of every disciplinary action will be maintained.

Jobsite Inspections

XYZ Construction Company will carry out daily job site inspections. Risks will be documented, analyzed, and timely corrections made. Detailed written inspections will be carried out by (Name/Title) on a weekly basis. The Safety Coordinator will travel to all the job sites to observe the possible safety/health risks, as well as to develop a plan to protect the workers of this company. Every safety inspection and correctional step will be recorded. The plan will include;

Eliminating the hazard.

Protecting against risks as required by OSHA.

Offering personal protective equipment and implementing its use.

Offering training to workers on safe work practices.

Coordinating workers’ protection via other contractors.

Accident Investigation Plan

Every single accident that results in property damage or worker injury will be investigated. It is important to note that the purpose of the investigation is to determine what has caused the accident in order to prevent the occurrence of similar incidences in the future, and not to find fault.            

All accidents irrespective of how slight they are must be reported immediately to the Supervisor.

It is the responsibility of the Supervisor to report all accidents to the Safety Coordinator urgently.

 The Supervisor must also complete a written accident investigation, when an accident occurs.

All employees involved in an accident or those who observed the accident happen, are expected to complete a written statement to give a description of the accident.

The Safety Coordinator will complete a detailed accident investigation to find out the root cause of the accident, and the corrective measures.

All cases of near misses (circumstances where an accident nearly occurred) should be reported. Correctives measures must be taken to avert the occurrence of a similar situation in the future. The Supervisor should keep a record of the near misses and the corrective measures taken, as well as to inform the Safety Coordinator about them so as to make similar corrections on all job sites of the company.

Personal Protective Equipment

Employees are expected to always wear tough hats on job sites while working.

In case of potential risks from particles, flying objects, chemicals, or dust, employees must wear eye protection.

Protective clothing shall be worn where necessary to protect against a potential danger.

Workers must wear leather work boots to protect themselves from chemicals, falling objects, or walking on sharp objects.  Canvas or athletic shoes are not allowed to be worn by employees.

Harnesses shall be used for fall protection as needed.
