What effect do you have on the public space around you? Well, this can only be effectively answered by you. The feelings people elicit towards you or the attitude people take towards you, determine whether, the effect you elicit, is positive or negative. As young people, people often have pre-assumptions’ attitude towards most. It is not uncommon, for young men, especially black males to be mistaken for muggers, robbers or in extreme cases murderers.

As for me, it was a mistaken identity for pick pocketers. I had alighted from a lift, in a busy building. The gentleman in front of me, who wore ear phones throughout the trip, dropped his wallet, seeing it first, I decided to be the great Samaritan I was, and hand it back to him. It had to take many witnesses and a statement with the security, to convince people I was not a pick pocketers. As he believed it could not have fallen without him perceiving and because of his assumptions on young people are not to be trusties.

The occurrences like this are not uncommon, as vividly narrated, by one of my friends, who are a deeply religious man. He walks one Sunday morning into the church, dressed to kill and holding his bible close as usual. One of the ushers rushes to him and tells him that they had been waiting for him, and the sermon was about to start. It had to take a while and the appearance of the real pastor to convince her that she was not who she thought she was.

Another friend will tell you how he adjusts every day, so as to make people feel safe around him. Standing six feet tall, well built muscles and low regard to glooming. He is often mistaken for mugger during night hours and darkly lit streets. He avoids direct eye contact to avoid intimidating passer bys and usually gives re-assuring smiles and cordial greetings to reassure others.

Grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors can distort the message of the author. The message might not meet its intended purpose. On the contrary, the message might reach the reader in a different way. This might create a negative or positive public space. This will depend on the attitude of the reader towards the delivered message.

Now, let's delve into the intricacies of language and its profound role in shaping public spaces. The nuances of expression extend beyond mere verbal exchanges—they encompass the written word, where grammatical precision and eloquence wield transformative power. A misplaced comma, an overlooked typo, or a poorly constructed sentence can be the chisel that inadvertently sculpts a different narrative.
