A skills Matrix is an integral part of visual management system and it can be defined as a simple visual tool that is used to assist in management, control as well as monitoring skills level. It basically illustrates all the tasks and skills that are required by an individual to work in an area or in a team as well as the current team members of a firm and their current competency for each task displayed. Its intended purpose is to assist in resource planning. The skills levels are quantified as untrained, learner, practitioner, developer and coach .The untrained has no experience whatsoever while the learner is in the process of being taught the skills. On the other hand, the practitioner is in a position to carry out the work instruction safely and to the collect standards on the first attempt without any assistance but he/she is not up to the standard speed. The developer can improve the skills safely, correctly to the required standards the first time and correct standard cycle time. The coach has the skills of a developer but he/she is in a position to train as well as develop other workers in carrying out the work instructions safely, correctly in the first time and to the required standards (People Management Skills Matrix).
Team leader must visualize only the information that is relevant to the team they lead whereas cell leader should visualize the information that is relevant to the cells under his control. Manager and the head of business should visualize the information that is relevant to his area of their responsibility.

According to Belbin’s Model, there are nine team roles categorized into three groups as action oriented, people oriented and thought oriented.
Action oriented roles
Shapers are people who challenge the team to improve .They are dynamic and extroverted. They stimulate others thereby finding ways of solving problems. Implementers are people who get things done by turning the team’s idea and concepts into actions and plans practically. Completer-finishers are people who ensure that projects are done thoroughly and make sure that there are no errors as well as omissions (Belbin's Team Roles).
People oriented roles
Coordinator- they take traditional team-leading role and are referred as chairmen. They have good listening skills and are able to recognize value of that each member brings. Team worker provides support and ensure that the members of the team are working effectively. Resource investigator is innovative and curious. They are able to negotiate for resources on behalf of the team (Belbin's Team Roles).
Thought oriented roles
Plant is the creative innovator who invents up new ideas as well as approaches. Monitor-evaluator analyses and evaluates ideas that other people come up with before they make a decision. They are critical thinkers while specialist provides specialist skills (Belbin's Team Roles).
