Equipment and machinery should be stored at yards within the construction site depending on the stage, and moved as the work progresses. In the beginning, they should be stored to the west of the site. The sub contractor is responsible for the provision and storage of the equipment and machinery and in ensuring every worker has the right tools for work. In case of damage, the sub contractor is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all tools.
Storage areas as close to the work site as possible should be reserved for materials, to facilitate timely delivery and avoid multiple material handling. An on-site shed be build close to the entrance which should be on the side of Pitt Street due to less interference with traffic, especially when driving into the site and by pupils at the school bus stop situated at Pacific highway. The site supervisor and the sub contractor have the overall responsibility of determining which materials are needed when to be collected from the material warehouse.
Recognize all potentially harmful substances by reviewing the labels, identifying key words such as toxic, flammable, corrosive and/or danger as an indication that the employees should be cautious. Areas for collection of hazardous waste should be allocated in compliance with regulations that govern them. This would probably be stored to the northern most part of the site.
Placement of Amenities
Amenities such as offices, for the consultant, contractor and sub contractor should be located to the right of the entrance in proximity to the parking. Other’s such as toilets, first aid rooms, washing rooms, changing rooms and lockers should be built at the site. Toilets should be to the northeast corner of the site far from the offices; next to them should be the washing rooms and the changing rooms. First aid services should be available and located close to the offices; a first aid expert should be responsible for the facility. These site facilities are supposed to be hired readymade.
Placement of Storage Areas
Storage areas for the construction site are within the stipulated areas for machines and equipment and others for materials. It would be uneconomical to come up with additional areas within the site due to constrained space.
Placement of Waste Bins
Recycling rules should be adhered to under the Standard Operating Procedure that provides guidelines on how to handle waste material. Another method would be by separating materials into reusable, and those to be dumped this goes a long way in ensuring the project site is cleaner and healthier with waste bins located at the entrance and the corners of the project site. During the course of building debris, formwork and nails should be cleaned from work areas. The supervisor should assign an employee to handle the waste; these should be collected regularly and transported to a landfill by a licensed transporter. The location should be close to that of the waste bins.
A scaffolding yard should be constructed next to the site office to ensure that every scaffold complies with set standards. Scaffold should be inspected by the engineer before being set up to ensure its strong and durable.
A construction crane is paramount in ensuring productivity; this can be hired. The crane should be placed away from obstacles such as power lines or close by structures within the hoarded or fenced up area of the site. The crane operator should be registered, and all regulations that are provided for operation of a crane should be followed. If placed at the centre it is more accessible from all sides
Access for Delivery of Materials/Equipment, Vehicle, Concrete Pumps & Trucks
Access for delivery should be from the main entrance and the layout should provide for routes within the site for movement of concrete pumps, trucks and vehicles while ensuring they can maneuver without collision.
Waste Disposal and Site Cleaning
Waste disposal should be done by licensed operators away from the construction site. The responsibility of every worker is to ensure his area is clean however; the site supervisor can delegate to the foreman to ensure the site is always tidy. All necessary efforts to avoid wastage should be undertaken.
Machinery or materials that generate excessive noise, smoke, vibration and/or pollutants should not be used within a construction site as this would be harmful to the environment and jeopardize public health.
A guard should be on-site at all times to keep the equipment and machinery safe while ensuring the only people with access to the site are workers. A record of the people who are entering the site should be kept on a daily basis by the security personnel by writing their identification details. Locks should be checked on a regular basis by the security personnel.
Hoarding and Fencing
Fencing should be done for safety purposes and to prevent unauthorized entry into the project site. Equipment and machinery within the site such as generators and water tanks are kept safe by fencing, this also marks out the construction site within which all safety procedure should be observed. The company’s placard and signs should be nailed where they are well visible.
Services Connection - Telephone, Electricity, Water and Gas
It should be established whether existing services such as water, electricity, gas and telephone are in proximity to the construction site. Once spaces have been allocated the contractor can connect to the water and gas and use the preferred telecommunication provider for telephone services. Generators should be bought to be used for the provision of electricity during the onset of construction; a generator should be located to the right of the entrance and kept safe to avoid tampering by workers.
Parking facilities for site workers
It would be appropriate to set the parking site close to the offices and amenities but a considerable distance from the construction site where the vehicles are safe. Only the senior management should be allowed to park within the site to avoid congestion.
Dewatering process after excessive rain
Excessive rain could hamper construction activities; it is thus necessary to come up with dewatering operations to avoid dewatering discharges such as sediments. Water that has accumulated due to precipitation may be removed by filtration. These involves using floating suction hose that pumps out the cleaner surface water, and sediment traps placed within the watercourse to remove the sediment. The site supervisor should be responsible for handling such activities when they occur.
